In the past, when I needed brown sugar for a recipe, I often found that my bag of store bought was hard as a rock. I've softened it in the microwave, by placing it in a dish next to a cup of boiling water, but if you don't use it right away, it quickly becomes hard again.
So, now I make my own, as I need it, and try to make just the amount that I need, so I don't have to store any.
